EXHIBITION MOTHERLAND #1
KALKIDAN HOEX & KAWTAR OUH

We kick-off our exhibition program with ‘Motherland’, an evolving open studio project with young emerging artists from Belgium and the Netherlands.

‘Motherland’ presents four artists who explore the intricacies of in-betweenness, home and belonging.

In May and July they will contribute with work that explores the tensions and solace of an (imagined) motherland.

KAWTAR OUH

Kawtar Ouh (°1999) is a self-taught photo- grapher based in Brussels. She grew up as the youngest of four children in a Moroccan and Riffian household. In the process of digging into her roots she finds inspiration in the family traditions originating in Nador, her parents’ birthplace.

In 2020 Kawtar Ouh created a series of photos called ‘Izouwran (Roots)’ for the Ana Nesh exhibition by creative platform El Arte, founded by Malikka Bouaissa. She describes her work as “capturing people’s voices on film”. The photographs presented are part of the series ‘Tamath Ino (Mijn grond / Mijn land)’ (2015-18) and will be shown for the first time.

KALKIDAN HOEX

Adopted from Ethiopia and raised in the Netherlands, Kalkidan Hoex (°1993) explores the intricacies of her identity through her artistic practice. Her personal journey leads her to connect with those she considers a part of this identity: youth of mixed descent.

Through the power of storytelling, Kalkidan investigates the ‘third world’ that emerges from their shared in-between- ness. Out of this commonality ‘TheNEW- tribe’ is born, a community providing a space for representing and re-imagining black culture through fashion and design grounded in empowering narratives.
