ULANA PERVEEVA

How would you introduce yourself?

I'm Ulana Perveeva, a 23-year-old artist originally from Kalmykia. My age and my roots are essential parts of my identity, as they have significantly influenced my creative journey.

Relating to the theme RELEASE:

For me, "release" signifies letting go and sharing, and my project is deeply connected to this theme. Moving to Belgium, I initially tried to integrate by shedding some of my customs and traditions from Kalmykia. However, I realised the importance of embracing and preserving these traditions. So, for me, "release" means shedding the shame I felt about my roots and fully embracing my culture.

Project Kalmykia:

My project in Kalmykia was a profound experience. It was a unique opportunity for me to reconnect with my hometown and document the complex emotions and relationships I have with it. I opted for a documentary approach, emphasising the natural and pure aspects of life. Rather than forcing images, I aimed to capture the essence of Kalmykia in a realistic and unfiltered way. This approach allowed me to represent the place as it truly is, not just the attractive aspects.

Way of presentation:

The presentation of my work is deeply personal and nostalgic. I chose to present it in a folder format, reminiscent of my childhood. This presentation style creates an intimate and smooth storytelling experience for the viewer. I also incorporated flags into my exhibition, inspired by wallpaper but reimagined with photographs. The use of a TV adds to the nostalgia and helps me distance myself from the digital world. Imperfection in my photographs is intentional; it aligns with my preference for analog presentation.

Nostalgia:

While I don't dwell in the past or regret my move to Belgium, I often find myself reflecting on my life in Kalmykia. I live in Belgium, but my mind frequently wanders back home, and I contemplate how different my life might have been if I hadn't moved. This parallel thinking shapes my work and keeps me connected to my values and roots.

Motivation:

My motivation primarily stems from a sense of responsibility toward my culture. I believe it deserves as much attention as any other subject. When I don't take pictures for a while, I feel like something is missing, and I am compelled to capture the stories around me. Personal projects and my family are  sources of inspiration.

Approach to Photography:

While I don't exclusively label myself as a documentary photographer, I appreciate the flexibility of not fitting into a single category. I strive to create images that defy strict categorisation. I'm also delving into the world of film and constantly challenge myself to work on the edge of various photography genres. My goal is to inspire Kalmyks and introduce others to our culture, which is dwindling in numbers. By showcasing Kalmykia through my photography, I hope to instill pride in my community. I believe it's crucial not to seek validation or take the easy route when photographing; it's essential to stay true to one's culture and honor it. I believe photographers should be mindful of the cultures they document, avoiding exploitation or a superior attitude toward their subjects.

Ultimate goal:

I aim to further develop as an artist and explore more artistic dimensions in my work. While I don't envision photography as my primary source of income, I see it as a side practice that allows me to express myself creatively. My long-term goal is to become more confident in my practice and potentially find ways to blend art and photography in meaningful ways.
